Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
Baking Soda Bath
- 6 cups water
- 1/4 cup baking soda
Topping
- Coarse sea salt
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Chocolate syrup (optional)
Instructions
1. Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
2. Mix the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and mix until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead and Rise: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
4. Shape the Pretzels: Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope and shape into pretzels.
5. Baking Soda Bath: In a pot, bring water and baking soda to a gentle boil. Carefully dip each pretzel into the boiling water bath for about 20 seconds, then place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
6. Add Chocolate Chips: Press mini chocolate chips onto the surface of each pretzel.
7. Bake: Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Bake for about 12 minutes or until the pretzels are golden brown.
